The GTS Maloo was the most powerful production utility ever built in Australia at the time of its release — and one of the most significant limited edition vehicles HSV ever produced. Just 250 units were made worldwide, 240 of which came to Australia, each individually numbered. This is not a car that came and went quietly. It was the moment HSV took the 430kW supercharged LSA engine from the GTS sedan — the most powerful Australian production car ever built — and dropped it into a ute.
What separated this car from a standard Maloo R8 was substantial. The supercharged 6.2-litre LSA V8 producing 430kW and 740Nm replaced the naturally aspirated LS3 entirely. The brake package stepped up to AP Racing forged 6-piston calipers with 390mm two-piece rotors front and rear. The GTS front fascia, unique 20-inch Blade forged alloy wheels in Dark Stainless, electric bi-modal exhaust, heavy duty MG9 Tremec gearbox and the 9.9-inch GTS limited slip differential all came as part of what made this car a genuinely different proposition to anything else wearing a Maloo badge. And in a world first for a production utility, HSV fitted Torque Vectoring — a technology at the time reserved for only a handful of exclusive global performance cars.
