This car began life as a genuine 2015 Holden Commodore VF Series II (MY16) SS V Redline — six-speed manual, factory 6.2-litre LS3 V8, and one of the last of the locally-built V8 Commodores.
From there, this car went to HDT Special Vehicles for a full Heritage Series VF-VK Group A 30th Anniversary Edition conversion — HDT's tribute to the 1985 VK SS Group A, the car most Australians know as the "Blue Meanie." Only 30 of these Anniversary Edition Commodores were ever built to mark that car's 30th anniversary, and this is number 04. Run down HDT's own order sheet for this build and there's barely a box left unticked — cam package, supercharger, brakes, suspension, body kit, wheels, interior. This wasn't a car built to a budget.
This car arrived at HDT in factory red. HDT stripped it back with the engine out and carried out a full repaint in Formula Blue — the correct colour worn by the original 1985 HDT VK Group A SS. It's a proper, ground-up respray, not a re-clear over the original colour.
Mechanically, this example goes beyond the standard Anniversary Edition specification. Alongside HDT's cam package, 3-inch cat-back exhaust with 1-7/8-inch headers and hi-flow cats, and ECU recalibration, this car was optioned with HDT's supercharger package — the 1.9-litre LSA unit, as fitted to HSV's factory GTS, bolted onto the factory LS3 block with a new HDT camshaft, hardened valvetrain internals, and an upgraded twin-plate organic/copper-mix clutch to handle the extra torque. On HDT's own chassis dyno in August 2018, it produced 410kW at the wheels. HDT's coil-over suspension and their brake package — 8-piston front, 4-piston rear — complete the mechanical build. More than $80,000 was invested in the HDT build alone, and it shows in every corner of this car.
Inside, this car carries HDT's custom leather trim and numbered dash badge, and retains the standard three-across rear bench — HDT's optional four-seat individual rear layout wasn't specified on this build as the original owner of this car had children and thought it would be too difficult to live with.
Every stage is backed by paperwork: the original HDT sales order and production sheet, tax invoices, the dyno sheet, and HDT's own signed certificate of authenticity from Managing Director Peter Champion. HDT's own production notes even record the test drive verdict at the time — this car was "found to be an absolute weapon" that would "need to be driven with lots of passion and caution."
